Safehouses have been part of the GTA series since GTA 3, serving as places where players can save their progress and, in later games, access various other features. However, how you acquired and interacted with them has varied from game to game. GTA 6 is taking another swing at how safehouses work, and here’s everything you need to know, including whether you can purchase them.

How Do Safehouses Work in GTA 6?

You can’t buy safehouses in GTA 6. Instead, you’ll gain access to them as you progress through the story.

Since Jason and Lucia are constantly on the run, buying a house and settling down isn’t exactly an option for them from a narrative point of view. Rockstar has instead designed GTA 6’s safehouses around the pair’s story progression, with their hideouts changing as they move through different chapters.

This is similar to how Red Dead Redemption 2 handled Arthur Morgan’s camp. Rather than buying a permanent home, your main base changed as the story progressed, giving you a new place to return to as the gang moved across the map. GTA 6 takes that idea and makes its safehouses far more interactive, with Rockstar’s Rob Nelson describing them as closer to RDR2’s camps than the safehouses in previous GTA games.

What Can You Do in GTA 6 Safehouses?

During the Extended Look, we saw Jason and Lucia inside a safehouse, and while Lucia prepared for their meeting with Brian and Lori, Jason engaged in a number of activities. He could open the fridge to grab a drink, turn the lights on and off, open doors, sit down and watch TV, and interact with various objects around the home. The previews also revealed that players can change clothes, shave, trim and style their hair and facial hair, sleep, eat an apple and throw its core in the bin, and spend time with each other through shared activities. There is a strong sense of interactivity throughout with an emphasis on role-playing.

Players can also keep personal vehicles at their residences, with each character maintaining their own vehicle collection. There’s clearly a lot more to these safehouses than simply having a place to save your game, with Rockstar putting much more emphasis on making them feel like actual homes.

Interestingly, Rockstar even experimented with making players buy groceries and manually restock the fridge. However, the system was ultimately cut because it added too much complexity. We also know that Jason initially lives rent-free in a house owned by Brian Heder in the Leonida Keys. According to Rockstar’s official character information, Brian lets Jason stay there in exchange for helping him with local shakedowns. This safehouse also has a basketball hoop that Jason can interact with.

Whether previously used safehouses remain accessible after you gain access to new ones remains to be seen and can only be confirmed once the full game is available. While you can’t buy safehouses across Leonida, GTA 6 will feature the most interactive versions of these spaces yet.
