Each iteration of GTA has played around with street racing in some form, and GTA Online offers the most detailed take yet, thanks to its dedicated underground car culture and racing activities. Rockstar hasn’t ignored that side of the series in GTA 6 either, with street racing once again making an appearance in its most ambitious open world yet.
Street Racing in GTA 6
Street racing is one of several racing types in GTA 6, taking place on public roads, particularly at night, with highly customized vehicles and the use of nitrous for an extra burst of speed.
This was shown off during the Extended Look for GTA 6, where we could see six highly modded and cosmetically customized sports cars racing along a public road at night.

During the short sequence, the player’s vehicle also uses nitrous, which visibly affects the entire screen, reminiscent of the effect seen in various arcade racing titles over the years. The nitrous also briefly pulls the camera out, giving the player a greater sense of speed.

There’s also a visible HUD showing the player’s position, race progress, and elapsed time. Road markers guide the player through the course, while a visible trail on the minimap shows the route ahead. Assuming Lucia is driving the vehicle, Jason can be seen leaning out of the passenger window, slapping the door and cheering her on.

Nitrous has been part of GTA’s racing history for years, first appearing as a vehicle modification in GTA: San Andreas. It later returned in The Ballad of Gay Tony and eventually made its way into GTA Online through Drag Races, after being absent from GTA V’s single-player mode. GTA 6 continues that tradition, with nitrous visibly being used during its nighttime street races.
Rockstar has been quite open about the car customization we can expect in GTA 6, and it’s shaping up to be the most detailed version yet. There are mod shops across Leonida that offer specific upgrades and customization features, making the hunt for the best performance and visual upgrades all the more exciting, especially if you want to build a dedicated racing vehicle.
