Ever since Rockstar made the jump to 3D, they have been obsessed with large, interactive, and immersive open worlds that feel alive and grounded, with a plethora of details around every corner and a variety of landscapes that give each map a real sense of place.

GTA 6 is easily their most ambitious title in practically every sense, with a world divided into several unique regions, each with its defining features, population, landscape, and environmental density. Based on everything we know so far, here is how the map of GTA 6 compares to GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other contemporary open-world titles.

GTA 6 Map Size

Rockstar has not officially announced the exact map size for GTA 6, nor have they revealed any in-game map diagrams showing how the world is laid out. Everything currently known about GTA 6’s map comes largely from the work of the community mapping project, which uses leaks, screenshots, trailers, and careful speculation to reconstruct a possible version of the game’s world.

The latest Version 12 of this fan-made map, led by Yanis, a key figure in the mapping community, represents the most up-to-date interpretation of GTA 6’s world based on available evidence. Here is what the map looks like right now:

The playable land area of GTA 6 is currently speculated to be around 150–200 km². This does not include the surrounding water mass, which would easily push the size way beyond that. Again, take this figure with a grain of salt, as it is based purely on work done by the mapping community and has not been officially announced or confirmed by Rockstar.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 Map Size

GTA 5 has a playable land area of around 80 km², an already impressive size for a seventh-generation console title, while GTA 6’s is roughly 2 to 2.5 times larger. You can see the GTA 5 map laid out over the latest speculated GTA 6 map below.

Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have roughly similar explorable land areas, even though RDR2 often feels larger due to slower traversal and more natural pacing.

Just to show how far we’ve come, here is GTA: San Andreas’ map laid out on GTA 6:

GTA 6 Map Size Compared to Other Open Worlds

Something important to remember about Rockstar’s approach to open-world design is that the focus is less on sheer size and more on density. Their urban environments are packed with endless details and unique NPCs with diverse routines and behavior, making each location feel distinct and lived-in, while Red Dead Redemption 2 extends that same philosophy into its natural landscapes, where forests, mountains, and plains feel equally rich and intentional.

While many open-world RPGs offer larger maps, they don’t always maintain the same level of consistency or environmental storytelling, which can make their worlds feel less grounded in comparison. Here is how the speculated 150–200 km² map size compares to other recent and notable open-world titles.

  • Here’s the updated list ordered by release date:
  • Grand Theft Auto V (2013) — ~75–80 km²
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) — ~135–142 km²
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) — ~72 km²
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) — ~75–130 km²
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018) — ~130 km²
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) — ~100–110 km²
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (2020) — ~120 km²
  • Elden Ring (2022) — ~79–90 km²

Something often apparent in Rockstar’s titles is that the world exists without your presence, as if it does not exist solely to serve you, which makes it feel more realistic and immersive to explore. You move through it out of curiosity rather than compulsion. You are not constantly directed by markers or indicators, but instead drawn in by environmental detail and a constant sense of discovery.

We’ll have to see what the final map of GTA 6 looks like, but it’s easy to make a few safe assumptions. GTA 6 features Rockstar’s most vertical world so far, with far more interactive spaces than anything they have done before. Regional variety is not limited to differences in terrain, but also extends to NPC interaction and behaviour. Not every region will offer the same types of activities, and players will need to venture into different parts of Leonida to experience a wider range of content. There are also rumors that GTA 6 will feature far more enterable buildings than ever before, and based on everything we have seen in the footage, that certainly seems to be the case.
