GTA 6 Weather System Explained – Confirmed and Rumored Weather Events

There are plenty of rumors flying around about the weather system we can expect in GTA 6. However, with so much misinformation around the web, and even more so-called “leaks” being disproven every time Rockstar releases more information, it can be hard to sift through it all and draw a reasonable picture.

Thankfully, Rockstar has now given us enough information to confirm most of the rumors, though there is one I’m still unsure about, listed at the end of this article.

Confirmed Weather Events GTA 6

Apart from sunshine, which was never not going to be in the game, here are all the weather events that have now been confirmed for GTA 6.

Dynamic Weather Systems

In the recent Game Informer article, it was confirmed that GTA 6 will have dynamic weather events. What this means is that, unlike past games, there won’t be a switch for the whole map or even per area that decides whether it’s raining or sunny. Instead, actual clouds will roll across the map.

This means that you’ll be able to see a storm approaching, instead of the weather just suddenly turning on you. Furthermore, water simulation will be dynamic as well, with heavy storms causing water to gush from rooftops, collect in puddles, and wet the player, animals, and even the ground.

It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before, since most weather in video games is pretty much scripted to happen a certain way. Puddles collect in the same places, the road is wet in a certain way, and animals and the environment don’t really change appearance according to weather. But there’s much, much more.

Real Wind

Wind in video games is usually simulated by a number of tricks that developers use, most commonly in disturbed foliage. Sometimes dust will also be used, but GTA 6 is set to go several steps further. According to Owen Shepherd, Vice President of Art for Lighting and Rendering at Rockstar, told Game Informer that the wind system will include “offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts, and occlusion from buildings.”

He goes on to say that even wind will even blow hair and debris around, and cause ripples on the water. Wind actually dynamically reacting to the world is just about unheard of in video games. But what do you get if you dial the wind up significantly? That’s right…

Tropical Storms and Hurricanes

Shepherd, while talking to Game Informer, also confirmed that we will see huge storms and even hurricanes in GTA 6. How frequent these will be is a mystery, but from what we can extrapolate from the article, it’s going to be amazing to witness. With the weather reacting dynamically with the world, we can only imagine what a hurricane is going to cause.

These were long-rumored, and I’m glad to see them in a game. But it does make me wonder: what happens if we get caught in a hurricane during a heist? Will we have to keep an eye on the weather reports, or examine the skies before committing to a robbery?

I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Rumored Weather Events GTA 6

Thanks to the information Rockstar has divulged thus far, we’ve managed to confirm almost every weather event that was rumored for so long. But one remains.

Tornadoes in GTA 6

Will we have tornadoes in GTA 6? Extrapolation of the Game Informer article suggests yes, given the dynamic weather systems. But it’s never outright confirmed during the interviews, so for now, this will remain a rumored weather event.

Also, am I the only one who didn’t know that real-life Florida has tornadoes? As someone from across the waters, I always heard about the heat and humidity, the tropical thunderstorms, the hurricanes — and they get Tornadoes, too? Man, people must really be pretty crazy to live in Florida.
