An NPC tries to wrestle the gun from Lucia.

How Reactive Are GTA 6 NPCs?

One of the questions playing on my mind since the Extended Look is: how reactive are the GTA 6 NPCs? We see two NPCs walking away from Lucia when they notice she has a gun. We see another NPC fighting Lucia to try to take her gun away. So, how deep does this really go?

I’ve roved through the previews content out there to try and paint the clearest picture possible. Let’s explore.

NPCs Might Actually be Contextually Aware

NPCs are all scripts and code, really. But GTA 6’s NPCs might actually be the closest to “real” we’ve ever experienced. In GTA 5, it was common for NPCs to react to you if you stand too close to them. But stand off a bit, and you can listen to entire nonsensical conversations.

During the previews, Rob Nelson, Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, explained that NPCs will be able to tell if you’re eavesdropping on their conversations in GTA 6.

“While we pushed interaction with NPCs as far as we could for Red Dead Redemption 2,” he told IGN, “with this game we are taking it much further.”

He goes on to explain that if you stand too close, NPCs will take notice and confront you. Some will become aggressive; others will just try to move away. This applies to conducting robberies, too. Some NPCs might cower in fear, but others will try to fight you, as seen in the extended look.

Some might even be carrying concealed firearms of their own, and something as simple as stealing a car or robbing a store could end up in a shootout with civilians.

There are also reports of an overweight officer chasing Jason before hunching over, out of breath. This seems to confirm that different NPCs will have different physical abilities depending on their build and maybe even habits. This is way beyond anything that’s come before now from Rockstar, and we can’t wait to see more.

Social Media and Criminal Profile

Social media is confirmed in the game, and the people you see online are actually real NPCs somewhere in the world, and you can run into them (through story or free roam, apparently). The next bit hasn’t been confirmed outright, but it’s heavily speculated that committing crimes and ending up on social media can even change the way NPCs who follow social media will react to you.

This has been speculated for a while now, however, and the previews certainly point towards this potentially being true.

It’s also speculated that your criminal profile might change how NPCs react to you, but again, that’s inferred from Rob Nelson’s interviews, and not outright confirmed just yet.

Whatever the truth, it’s already clear we’re getting the most detailed NPCs ever to grace our screens to date. RDR 2’s NPCs make the world feel alive and lived in, and if GTA 6’s NPCs are going a step beyond, I can’t wait to see what Rockstar has cooked up for us.
