Just how realistic will GTA 6 be?

Despite being just three months away from the biggest release of the decade, we still have precious little information on what gameplay features we’ll see in GTA 6. We do have enough to make some guesses, though, but today I’d like to talk specifically about the realism we’re bound to experience.

There are some pretty mixed reactions going on regarding the realism expected of GTA 6. Some think it won’t be “fun,” and it’s these same people who found Red Dead Redemption 2 to be a boring game. Others crave more realism in their GTA experience. Me? I’m somewhere in the middle.

So let’s cover some ideas of just how realistic GTA 6 might be, starting with a burning question that’s been on my mind.

Will GTA 6 be as Realistic as Red Dead Redemption 2?

The answer to this question is almost certainly no. Sure, we’ll likely have dynamic body types and maybe even hair growth, but I don’t think we’ll need to eat, buy groceries, sleep, and everything else we needed to do in RDR 2. GTA is not, and never has been, about realism.

We will probably have a more realistic wanted system, like RDR 2, and very likely amazing weather. But I highly doubt we’ll have hunger or thirst mechanics. The world itself in GTA 6 could be more like RDR 2’s, though, as I discuss in my look at How GTA 6 Benefits from RDR 2’s World Design.

There will likely be more animal ecosystems and more believable NPC interactions. Of course, we’ll also get better graphics as Rockstar continues to tweak its RAGE engine.

But will GTA 6 be as realistic as RDR 2? Almost certainly, no.

Fuel And Business Management

I’ve speculated before that we might see some sort of fuel system, and perhaps even deeper property management in GTA 6. The fuel system likely won’t be anything crazy, though, and it’s likely to function similarly to the horse hunger system in RDR 2. If you do need to gas up your cars, it’s likely you’ll have some sort of consumable to do that on the go, too.

Speaking of vehicles, I don’t think we’ll be getting any sort of wear to our cars. So the tires won’t need replacing, the shocks won’t degrade over time, etc. You’ll probably just need to give your car a wash every so often to keep it looking brand-new.

As for the property management, I’m not confident we’ll get something advanced, even though the possibilities are intriguing. Imagine being able to hire NPCs of different skill levels to oversee different aspects of your business. That’d be awesome. Buy a nightclub in a shady area? Better get good bouncers to keep the rep up. Got a used car showroom for flipping your stolen vehicles? Better have a good chop shop in your network and a couple of good lawyers, etc.

But then GTA isn’t about managing properties, so we likely won’t see anything this advanced. And we certainly won’t have to worry about building maintenance or anything like that.

Severe Weather Conditions

It’s been speculated on almost endlessly, but we do expect a very different weather system in GTA 6. There’s always the talk of real-time hurricanes showing up to ruin your plans.

But I don’t think we’ll get actual hurricanes in the open world. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, and maybe even high winds that affect car handling, but no cataclysmic storms is my guess. So, yes, the weather will be more realistic, with dynamic flooding and weather damage being a very real possibility. But full-blown hurricanes? Nah.

Dynamic Hair and Body

It’s been all but confirmed through screenshots and trailers that we will, once again, have dynamic weight for the first time since San Andreas. Jason and Lucia’s bodies do suggest that a bit of change is possible in the game, being slightly different here and there across everything that Rockstar has released.

I’m just not sure whether it’ll be quite as drastic as in San Andreas. We’re probably looking for a system closer to RDR 2’s weight system, where the changes are a bit more subtle and have an effect on physical performance and health rather than looks.

Hair growth could very possibly be present in the game, since that system looked really smooth and refined in RDR 2. And folks have pointed to the duo having different hairstyles as proof of this same system being present, which is obviously a weak argument. We’ve been able to change our hairstyles in GTA games since San Andreas, and none of them have ever featured hair growth.

Overall, How Realistic Will GTA 6 Be?

Overall, I think GTA 6 will be more realistic than GTA 5 in most things. More dogged cops, a more advanced wanted system, and the inability to carry all the guns in the game on you at any given time (don’t ask me where Trevor keeps his rocket launcher). But it won’t be as realistic as something like RDR 2.

We won’t have to worry about food, sleep, or staying hydrated. But then again, this is speculation. Who knows what Rockstar’s next move is?

What do you think? Did I miss anything? How realistic will GTA 6 be at the end of the day?
