GTA 6 will almost certainly launch with an online component, serving as a sequel to their incredibly successful GTA Online, which has been available as a standalone title since 2022. GTA 6 is launching on two major consoles, with a PC release expected later, but cross-platform support remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Rockstar has not officially confirmed whether GTA 6 will support crossplay or cross-progression at the time of writing. Everything we know so far is based on their previous online releases and how they’ve handled multiplayer in the past.
Is GTA 6 Cross-Platform at Launch?
GTA 6 will likely not have cross-platform support at launch if Rockstar’s previous approach to online functionality is anything to go by.
While crossplay is becoming pretty standard in modern multiplayer games, Rockstar has always kept its online ecosystems separate. Because of that, it’s more realistic to expect GTA 6 to follow the same pattern at launch.
There is no official confirmation on crossplay or cross-progression in GTA 6 as of writing. Neither of the store pages for GTA 6 mentions crossplay or cross-platform play in the tags yet.
Will GTA 6 Support Crossplay Between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
GTA 6 is unlikely to support crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
None of Rockstar’s major online releases, including GTA Online and Red Dead Online, have ever supported crossplay between consoles. Each platform family has always been kept separate, even across different generations.

Unless Rockstar changes direction for GTA 6 specifically, console crossplay doesn’t look like a priority.
Can PC Players Play GTA 6 With Console Players?
It’s even less likely that PC players will be able to play with console players.
Rockstar usually treats PC as a separate environment because of issues like cheating and modding. GTA Online on PC, even with anti-cheat systems like BattleEye, still struggles with hackers, and that’s something Rockstar will definitely want to avoid repeating on a bigger scale.

Because of that, PC and console crossplay would require a major shift in how they handle online systems.
Will GTA 6 Have Cross Progression or Cross Save?
GTA 6 is unlikely to include cross-progression or cross-save support at launch.
Rockstar has previously allowed players to transfer GTA Online data within console families, such as moving progress from PS4 to PS5, but progression remains tied to that ecosystem. Similarly, when the Enhanced Edition of GTA 5 launched on PC, players were able to migrate their GTA Online data to the newer version.
However, these transfers are limited to their respective platforms. PC players cannot continue their progress on consoles, and console players cannot carry progression over to PC.
Why Players Want Crossplay in GTA 6
Crossplay support in GTA 6 would significantly improve the online experience, especially considering how massive Rockstar’s player base is across PlayStation, Xbox, and eventually PC.
There are several advantages to having crossplay support in GTA 6, especially for a multiplayer experience of this scale:
- Easier matchmaking across all platforms.
- Bigger and more active online lobbies.
- Friends can play together no matter the platform.
- Better long-term health for GTA 6 Online.
- A more connected player base across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Modern multiplayer games have normalized crossplay support over the last few years, making it easier for friends to play together regardless of their platform. Titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Minecraft already support cross-platform multiplayer, which makes the potential absence in GTA 6 feel even more noticeable in 2026.
Why GTA 6 May Not Support Crossplay at Launch
Ideally, GTA 6 should launch with crossplay because it has become a standard feature in modern multiplayer games. However, considering even Red Dead Online, Rockstar’s most recent major multiplayer release, launched without crossplay, there is a strong chance GTA 6 will follow the same pattern.

If Rockstar truly saw crossplay as a priority, GTA Online would probably already support it by now. Instead, console players have remained locked within their own ecosystems for years.
GTA 6 is releasing in a very different multiplayer landscape compared to GTA 5 in 2013. Crossplay is no longer treated as a bonus feature, especially for massive online games. Even if GTA 6 launches without it, there is always a chance Rockstar could add some form of cross-platform support later down the line.
