GTA Online, the online component of GTA 5, continues to be a recurring revenue cash machine for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, and the company hasn’t shied away from highlighting its significance, even 13 years after its debut. As GTA 6’s marketing finally takes form, the question about the upcoming title’s online component remains an unacknowledged mystery.
During the latest Take-Two earnings call, Strauss Zelnick reiterated that the company continues to put significant resources into GTA Online and expects to support it going forward. He pointed out that GTA Online continues to deliver record-setting engagement at times, and while reactions to individual updates may vary, “consumers really love them.”
Generally speaking, our update cadence for GTA Online has been pretty stable. Some of the updates have been amazing, some have been less successful. Generally speaking, consumers really love them. The cadence hasn’t really changed, and we do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward.

We already know from leaked data that GTA Online generates roughly $500 million a year, which puts Take-Two’s recent revenue breakdown into perspective. Recurring spending makes up 84% of the company’s revenue, while game sales and other sources account for the remaining 16%. That figure is obviously not specific to GTA Online, but it highlights just how important recurring spending has become for Take-Two.

With how consistently successful the current iteration of GTA Online remains, Rockstar doesn’t seem particularly interested in showcasing the next iteration just yet and is instead focused on the single-player launch of GTA 6.

That’s something journalist Jason Schreier recently pointed out in his latest GTA 6 video, although he was careful to clarify that his comment shouldn’t be interpreted as insider information. Rockstar has simply described GTA 6 as a single-player experience so far, leaving the company’s plans for its next multiplayer experience largely unknown.
This doesn’t mean GTA 6 Online won’t exist, nor does it mean Rockstar won’t announce it soon. It simply means that right now, there’s no public information indicating that Rockstar is ready to discuss it in any capacity, even during its important investor calls. If anything, the company’s continued focus on GTA Online makes its silence around GTA 6’s multiplayer component even more noticeable and only fuels anticipation for what the next online component will really look like.
With how much revenue GTA Online continues to generate, it’s hard to imagine Rockstar isn’t looking to build on what it has already created with GTA 6. Rockstar’s acquisition of Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, ahead of GTA 6’s release is also worth keeping in mind, particularly given how important user-generated content has become to the wider GTA ecosystem.
It’s very possible that Rockstar will reveal, or simply announce, the online component ahead of the single-player release, but they probably don’t want to take any attention away from GTA 6 itself, which is already one of the most anticipated single-player experiences of the past decade. Rockstar has been extremely deliberate with how much it reveals and when it reveals it, so there’s little reason for the studio to rush into discussing GTA 6 Online while the main game is still the center of attention.
