Florida Deputies Find a Live Fish Swimming in a Bottle During Bizarre Car Search

Routine car searches are nothing new, especially in areas where crime has been reported. While most searches don’t yield any results, some potentially reveal things that are illegal or suspicious. However, Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies found something entirely strange on September 21, 2026.

The authorities stopped four occupants during proactive patrols, but the car turned up very strange items. According to reports, authorities found:

  • Narcotics and drug paraphernalia
  • A handgun with an altered serial number
  • Bolt cutters and a large pry bar
  • Motorcycle equipment
  • Gas cans
  • License plates that allegedly belonged to someone else
  • A live fish swimming inside a bottle

While everything else makes sense if you think about things from a burglar’s perspective, the live fish is what makes things weird. The search was quickly connected to a nearby motorcycle burglary, where deputies determined that one of the recovered license plates belonged to the burglary victim. Not to mention, the motorcycle parts were also allegedly stolen from the same victim.

Driving around with a live fish isn’t a crime, though the other possessions definitely gave the authorities grounds to arrest the four passengers. The passengers were Amy Romeu, Eduardo Hernandez, Diego Bara-Arcia, and Osvaldo Ramirez-Triana, and they were all arrested for different things.

While all four were arrested for burglary-related charges, including burglary, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal mischief, and grand theft, Ramirez-Triana also faces a weapons charge. This doesn’t mean the other three are let off easy, because they face drug-related charges.

The kicker is that this entire thing could have gone entirely under the radar if the Lee County Sheriff’s Office hadn’t released the bodycam footage captured by the authorities. The footage clearly shows one deputy say, “A muffler for a bike, oh good, another giant pry bar, a fish.” While the fish itself is funny, commenters primarily commented on the deadpan voice of the recorded deputy, suggesting that this wasn’t even the oddest thing he had seen this week.
