Driving a car requires people to be of a specific age for a reason, since panic can very easily settle in when behind the wheel. However, 42-year-old Carribean Myers of Riverview, Florida, apparently thought she and her 11-year-old child were above the law when she let the child drive their SUV from their home to a 7-Eleven.

Happening around 8:35 PM, which already means that it was dark enough that the child would struggle to see the road, things took a turn when the child attempted to stop at the gas station where the 7-Eleven was. However, according to the police, the child mistook the accelerator for the brake and crashed into a concrete traffic barrier.

The good thing is that no one was injured in this avoidable accident. The bad thing is that the SUV and building were damaged. Naturally, the authorities were involved in all of this, resulting in the mother being arrested on charges of child abuse and permitting an unauthorized minor to drive.

Commenters were somewhat divided on all of this. While most agreed with the consequences and stated that the mother shouldn’t have let her child drive the car under any circumstances, others believed that it’s fine for a child to drive under the correct supervision. However, the people in the latter category were in the extreme minority.

The Mother Was Already In Hot Water

Upon further research, the authorities also discovered that the mother’s driver’s license had been invalid for over a month before the incident occurred. This meant that not only did Myers let her underage child drive her vehicle, but she did so while having an invalid license herself.

Considering all of this, it makes sense that Myers was ultimately arrested. She willingly walked out of her vehicle after the crash and surrendered to the authorities before she was booked into Hillsborough County Jail.
