Every GTA is packed with memorable missions, for good and bad reasons. Whether it’s the RC helicopter mission from Vice City or the armored trio unloading miniguns on cops in GTA 5, there is no shortage of iconic moments burned into our collective memories from these games. Some missions transcend that memorable status, though, and become truly iconic. Here are our picks.
The Jewel Store Job – GTA 5
Being the first heist players are introduced to in GTA 5, Rockstar made sure to show off its character-switching and multi-layered heist system in spades. You had to actually plan the robbery, and you could go through the front doors for a loud approach or be smart about it and use BZ gas to knock everyone inside unconscious before making off with the jewelry. You take control of both Michael and Franklin, switching between them on the fly as the robbery unfolds and the crew makes its escape.
Sure, plenty of heists, especially in GTA Online, went on to become far more elaborate, but the Jewel Store Job remains a simple and effective introduction to GTA 5’s heist system. It’s also an important narrative moment, marking the beginning of Franklin’s partnership with Michael and his first real step into the world of professional heists.
Rub Out – GTA: Vice City
Tommy and Lance, M4s in hand, storm Ricardo Diaz’s mansion in one of Vice City’s most memorable missions. The sequence is packed with cinematic touches, including the famous shot of Lance opening the trunk to reveal their weapons, a clear nod to Pulp Fiction, while the assault itself and Diaz’s eventual downfall closely mirror the climactic shootout from Scarface.

Fighting through Diaz’s guards and finally confronting the man responsible for Lance’s brother Victor’s death makes for a hugely satisfying payoff. Diaz’s death also marks a major turning point for Tommy, who takes over his mansion and begins establishing himself as the new power in Vice City. It’s Vice City in all its glory.
End of the Line – GTA: San Andreas
Most GTA games generally have satisfying final missions, but nothing comes close to the catharsis you get after finishing San Andreas’ “End of the Line.” Smashing into Big Smoke’s fortress with a SWAT tank, clearing floors of gang members, and finally confronting Smoke himself, the mission feels like the culmination of everything CJ has been through.
After killing Big Smoke, the chaos continues as CJ chases Tenpenny across Los Santos, eventually bringing the story to its explosive conclusion. From the assault on Smoke’s fortress to the final chase through the burning streets, “End of the Line” has everything you could want from a GTA finale and remains one of the series’ most satisfying final missions.
Three Leaf Clover – GTA 4
There are a lot of iconic missions to pick from in GTA 4, but Three Leaf Clover absolutely takes the cake. Niko and the McReary brothers’ assault on the Liberty City Bank starts with a simple request: show up in a suit, with little else revealed about the big job. Once you’re on the way to the bank, Patrick lays out the plan, and what follows is one of the most intense missions in the entire GTA series. It also heavily influenced GTA 5 and GTA Online, which took the concept of elaborate heists and made them central to the game.
Clearly inspired by Michael Mann’s Heat, the shootout against the cops that follows the robbery is loud, chaotic, and relentlessly intense. The suits, weapons, money bags, and prolonged street escape are clear nods to the film’s iconic bank-robbery sequence.
Wrong Side of the Tracks – GTA: San Andreas
Yes, the train mission. Big Smoke’s iconic “all you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ” rings in your ears as you keep failing this train chase sequence, desperately trying to take out Vagos members, only for Big Smoke to keep falling off the Sanchez, running into an obstacle, or driving off the track.
A million things can and will go wrong, always leading to Big Smoke repeating that line. His disappointed delivery is as iconic as the game itself. It’s hilarious thanks to Smoke’s banter, frustrating because of the track you’re on, and one of the most iconic missions in the series.
These are just five of the many iconic missions across the GTA series. Rockstar has given us countless memorable moments over the years, whether they’re remembered for incredible set pieces, hilarious dialogue, or simply being infuriatingly difficult.
