30-year-old Jocelyn Chandler and 32-year-old-Katrina Garrett found themselves in hot water when they left their children home alone to do entirely unrelated things. Living in Muncie, Indiana, everything started when the authorities got a concerning call about a 2-year-old girl.

According to the call, the child was found outside by herself, screaming, wearing a full diaper, and apparently covered in bee stings. The police reportedly made their way there as soon as they could, only to find the toddler outside and four other children inside the home with no adults present anywhere.

Since the oldest child was just 11 years old, this basically meant that the children had been left without adult supervision. Upon further inquiry, the police learned that this had happened before, and that this was nothing new. According to two of the children, the parents had left to pick up a babysitter but hadn’t returned yet.

Paramedics examined the toddler and discovered that she had multiple bee stings on her backside. It took a while, but Chandler and Garrett eventually returned to state that they had left to pick up a babysitter. At least, that was the original plan.

Instead, the two women left the children alone, drove to Meadowview Garden Mobile Home to pick up a babysitter, stopped at an ATM and realized they didn’t have enough money for the planned nail appointment for the older children, dropped the babysitter back off, went to KFC to get food for themselves, and then finally returned home. According to Garrett, the children had been left alone for anywhere between 45 minutes and an hour.

This Wasn’t The Only Cause For Concern

While leaving the children to fend for themselves already raised many red flags, it wasn’t the only reason the police were so alarmed. Officers searched the place with Garrett’s consent to find unsecured knives on a table within the children’s reach, as well as what they believed to be raw marijuana on the table.

Police also reportedly found drug paraphernalia, open diapers containing feces, and a litter box that hadn’t been cleaned for a while. Garrett allegedly confirmed that the marijuana belonged to her, while Chandler acknowledged that there was already an active Department of Child Services case involving her children.

Both women were subsequently arrested and charged with preliminary charges of five counts of neglect of a dependent and two counts of marijuana possession each. Both were booked into the Delaware County Jail on $11,000 bonds each.
