Most car robbery cases are usually fairly tame, but this one in particular caught the attention of many because of how it ended. On September 9, 2026, officers tried to stop a stolen SUV on the Pacific Highway on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Naturally, the police called for the suspect to stop, but he alledgedly refused and continued to speed up. The chase continued through several suburbs, but the police eventually had to call it off because of safety concerns. This wasn’t the end of things, because the driver allegedly crashed into a hatchback near the end of the Pacific Highway outside Lake Munmorah Shopping Center.
The good news is that no one was injured during this chase. However, the police naturally approached the location of the crash to catch the suspect. To avoid this from happening, the suspect allegedly got out of the SUV and ran from the crash. It makes sense that this prompted a search for the culprit.
Fortunately for the authorities, they didn’t have to look too far for the culprit. He was eventually found hiding underneath another vehicle in the shopping center car park that was close to where the crash initially happened. The police were quick to arrest the suspect, who was later identified as 32-year-old Jay Mitchell Smith.

The Chase Didn’t End Well For the Suspect
Smith was allegedly carrying all sorts of things, including illegal substances and a weapon. The SUV was also apparently stolen from a licensed premises in Jesmond, near Newcastle, on August 7. Not to mention, the vehicle was also apparently involved in a fail-to-pay crime that same Wednesday, so that was another crime added to the suspect’s already long list of offences.
Commentators were quick to talk about the admittedly humorous way the entire thing ended. While it was obviously a good thing that no one was ultimately hurt, the suspect attempting to hide under a car and getting caught must have looked hilarious in person, or at least that’s the consensus.
