Grand Theft Auto 6 is understandably taking the gaming scene by storm, despite there being some months until it comes out. While gamers are understandably hyped for it, it seems like Miami-Dade County also wanted to take advantage of it. Miami-Dade County Officials pitched Rockstar Games on a potential GTA 6 promotional partnership.

The pitch was reportedly called GTA x MDC, and it was supposed to turn parts of real-world Miami-Dade into a temporary version of Vice City. In particular, it was supposed to have Vice City-themed wraps on Metromover trains, branding at Miami International Airport, Vice City-themed murals, and branding of the game on public infrastructure and other locations.

It’s important to keep in mind that Miami-Dade County was the one to come up with these ideas, not Rockstar. This was effectively a one-sided pitch, though some social media posts started spreading misinformation that Rockstar wanted the partnership to go through.

Despite all of this, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz publicly opposed the proposal. She argued that Miami-Dade shouldn’t publicly facilitate a game that’s so crime-filled. The game apparently promotes violence, robbery, and other issues that her officers deal with in real life, which makes the game unfit to be represented.

She elaborated by saying that the county needs to consider the message collaborating with Rockstar Games would send. According to her, turning public spaces into a fictional version of Miami built around crime is the opposite of what the county should display.

Fans Aren’t Happy About the GTA 6 Marketing Dispute

While most of the residents of the country didn’t say much, those who learned about the dispute on social media weren’t happy. Many of them said that the sheriff is taking the game’s fictional violence too literally. According to them, GTA has been associated with Miami for decades, and the game has already done a lot for the place.

Critics also stated that the proposed campaign would be an extension of a relationship that already exists. They believe that the game is obviously fictional, and it’s an excellent way to showcase Miami’s political reach by collaborating with arguably the largest video game company.
