41-year-old Kimberly Shortell of Ronkonkoma, New York, was in for a rough day on September 29. Everything started when she dropped her 10-year-old daughter at Islip Town Beach around 3:55. Driving her 2026 Hyundai Sonata, the authorities believe that Shortell was allegedly under the influence because what happened next was entirely unexpected.

First, she hit a parked car. After that, she went through a chain-link fence. This wasn’t all, because she then drove across the tennis courts that were behind the fence before she crashed through the chain-link fence on the other side. The good thing is that nobody was on the tennis courts when the crash happened, but it’s clear that something was amiss.

The authorities quickly arrived at the scene, and Shortell was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Still, the damage done to her Sonata was only slightly less impactful than the damage done to the tennis courts.

The police arrested Shortell and charged her with aggravated DWI with a child passenger under 15, under Leandra’s Law, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and endangering the welfare of the child. With all of this being said, the actual charges haven’t been found conclusive yet. She is scheduled to be arraigned later, and the official Suffolk County Police release noted that these are strictly accusations.

According to the press release, Shortell should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Still, that didn’t stop commenters from making assumptions. One of the most common assumptions, aside from this being just another case of someone driving under the influence, is that something could have been wrong with Shortell’s vehicle. Since she was able to comfortably reach the Islip Town Beach to drop her daughter, there’s a chance that something could have happened to the vehicle after that that caused the crash.
