Any retail store losing merchandise to a shoplifting incident hurts enough, but one specific Macy’s had to face two incidents on the same day. In particular, the Macy’s store at Cross County Center in Yonkers, New York, is involved in both of these incidents. Fortunately, both alleged shoplifters were caught before the merchandise could be lost for good.
The first incident happened on September 18, when 45-year-old Michael Silvera of Mount Vernon allegedly tried to leave Macy’s with more than $300 in unpaid merchandise. Officer Steven Velasquez confronted the alleged shoplifter, prompting Silvera to run from the scene. However, he was caught fairly quickly. He still had the merchandise, hangers, and security devices that he allegedly stole, allowing the police to promptly confiscate everything.
Before the Macy’s employees could recover from what had happened, 25-year-old Davon Mallory, also of Mount Vernon, entered the same Macy’s. He allegedly stole merchandise from the same store on the same day as the first incident, and Officer Steven Velasquez also stopped him. This initiated a foot pursuit where additional officers had to be called in to help Velasquez catch the alleged shoplifter.

At the end of the day, both incidents were fairly similar. Not only were they both at the same store and on the same day, but the two alleged suspects both offered to return or pay for the merchandise to avoid arrest. Mallory also reportedly told officers that he’d pay for what he allegedly attempted to steal during his pursuit.
Both Alleged Shoplifters Were Charged
Looking at how similar the two cases were, it makes sense that both alleged suspects were charged with petit larceny, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration in the second degree.
While not too dramatic, commenters saw the coincidence of both alleged suspects choosing the same day and store for shoplifting as funny. Officer Steven Velasquez, being at the center of everything, will also likely be even more vigilant going forward.
