GTA 5 launched in 2013 and was a monumental achievement on both a technical and commercial level. It is still played by millions every day, and while its visuals have seen several upgrades over the years, the underlying technology remains incredibly impressive even today.
With GTA 6 now approaching its release date, we wanted to take a look at every major confirmed improvement in the upcoming title and just how far Rockstar’s proprietary RAGE engine has evolved over the past 13 years.
Improved Lighting and Overall Fidelity
GTA 6 almost certainly uses Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI) to light its vast world, as seen throughout both trailers. Rockstar introduced RTGI in Grand Theft Auto V’s Enhanced update for PC, which dramatically improved how light bounced off various surfaces. However, unlike GTA 5, which was never built around ray tracing from the ground up, GTA 6 appears to use it as its primary lighting solution, allowing objects and surfaces to react far more naturally to environmental lighting. Additionally, Rockstar seems to be combining ray-traced reflections with screen space reflections (SSR) for a more realistic overall presentation.

Virtually every aspect of GTA 6’s technical presentation is a major leap over GTA 5, whether it is the character models, texture quality, animation fidelity, physics systems and how they react to NPCs and world events, the advanced hair rendering across the entire population, or the sheer level of vehicle detail. This is not a cross-generation release and has been built specifically for the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X hardware, with Rockstar clearly pushing the consoles to their limits.
Dense NPC Variety, Detail, and Behavior
One of the most impressive upgrades in GTA 6 over GTA 5 is the sheer variety of NPCs, many of whom are detailed enough to pass off as main characters in other games purely based on visual fidelity alone. Not only are NPCs far more visually detailed, with unique clothing, facial features, body hair, and hairstyles, but there is also a much wider range of body types, skin tones, and apparent nationalities, making the world feel far more grounded and believable.

Dynamic NPC behavior has always been a hallmark of Rockstar titles, with Red Dead Redemption 2 showcasing its most advanced implementation to date. However, GTA 6 appears to push this further with NPC behavior that feels more reactive and less strictly tied to obvious set routines. From what has been shown so far, characters can be seen engaging in a wide variety of activities across Leonida State, such as disrupting traffic, committing crimes, taking part in street races, observing and reacting to other NPCs, sitting on docks, eating and drinking, exercising, commuting, gathering, conversing, hunting, relaxing at bars, shopping in stores, taking pictures of wildlife, filming their surroundings, and dancing in clubs.

NPCs also appear to react more naturally to player presence, glancing at them entering stores or even as they’re engaged in activities, environmental disruption like active chases, and unfolding events around them like traffic disruptions. There also appears to be a noticeable increase in how many NPCs can exist and interact within the same space without breaking immersion, adding to the sense of density in busy areas.

Everything shown so far gives NPCs a much higher degree of believability, thanks to increased individual detail, improved animation quality, and more dynamic behavior systems working together. Compared to GTA 5, the result is a world that feels less like a backdrop and more like a constantly evolving space filled with independent life.
More Advanced Physics and Environmental Interaction
Rockstar’s obsession with immersive physics and player interaction comes back from the early 3D GTA titles and served as one of the defining features of their RAGE engine, which debuted with Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis and GTA IV. Characters in the game world had separate layers of interaction with advanced ragdoll physics, clothing existing independently and reacting naturally to movement, and a lot more. Rockstar continued to build upon their highly interactive physics engine with GTA V and really peaked in Red Dead Redemption 2, which allowed players to interact with several aspects of the game world to wreak havoc and run into often hilarious situations.

Beyond the larger physics upgrades, GTA 6 also appears to be packed with smaller environmental and character details that make the world feel far more alive and reactive. Character models now feature far more advanced physical detail, including muscle deformation during movement, realistic clothing folds, visible body hair, gradual sweat buildup, uneven sunburns, and hair that reacts naturally to water and heat.

Accessories and smaller clothing elements also behave independently, with jewelry, flip flops, bracelets, and loose clothing all reacting dynamically during movement.

Environmental interaction also appears significantly more advanced across the board. Dirt, water, debris, leaves, and smaller objects react naturally to movement and weather conditions. Water physics and surface detail have also seen major improvements, with varying ocean coloration based on depth, visible water runoff on vehicles, floating debris, and more convincing liquid simulations, which can be seen in beer bottles.

Even interiors and props feature an incredible level of detail, including furniture reacting to body weight, visible condensation and fizz on bottles, scratched surfaces, worn materials, and functioning environmental systems throughout the world.
Vastly Improved Vehicle Detail and Traffic Systems
GTA V already has some of the best driving and customization mechanics in an open world title, but Rockstar appears to have significantly expanded the rendering quality, density, customization options, deformation detail, and overall vehicle variety in Grand Theft Auto VI. Based on the screenshots and trailers shown so far, vehicles accumulate grime, mud, scratches, and general wear in a far more realistic manner depending on their surroundings and weather conditions. Urban areas like Vice City are packed with high-end cars, many of which can be seen attracting crowds of NPCs who stop to admire and even film them.

Tracks left behind by vehicles also appear far more realistic, accurately reflecting tire size and tread patterns depending on the surface. Suspension physics look noticeably more reactive as well, particularly during braking, sharp turns, and off-road driving. Traffic behavior overall feels substantially more dynamic, with denser roads, believable spacing between vehicles, traffic jams, roadside activity, random civilian behavior, and high-speed police chases all contributing to a much more convincing driving atmosphere.

Vehicle interiors also seem considerably more detailed than previous Rockstar titles, with dashboards packed with functional meters, buttons, knobs, displays, and material detail that reflect the type and condition of the vehicle being driven.

The overall variety of vehicles also looks far more impressive than previous GTA titles, with everything from luxury sports cars and heavily customized street racers to airboats, commercial trucks, police interceptors, motorcycles, and civilian watercraft appearing throughout Leonida.
Expanded Character Customization and Clothing Detail
GTA 6 expands on the already detailed character systems introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2 by pushing clothing, appearance, and customization much further, allowing for a highly varied and dynamic presentation of both main characters and NPCs. In the second trailer alone, Jason and Lucia are shown with multiple distinct outfits, hairstyles, and accessory combinations, including watches, necklaces, caps, earbuds, glasses, makeup, and nail polish, all contributing to different styles and looks for the characters.

Every piece of clothing appears highly detailed, with visible fabric folds, wear patterns, dirt accumulation, sheen, and material-specific rendering that varies with lighting and movement. Clothing also seems to react more naturally to body types and motion, with subtle deformation and physics-driven movement rather than static modeling. This level of detail extends beyond just the protagonists, with NPCs also displaying varied outfits and body-specific clothing behavior.

There are also signs of environmental and situational impact on character appearance, such as sweat buildup under heat and sunlight, and accessories and clothing reacting dynamically during physical activity.
Overall, GTA 6 allows players to customize Jason and Lucia in several ways, with its fabric rendering and physics doing a strong job of conveying realism and personality.
Expanded Wildlife, Underwater Exploration, and Dynamic Ecosystems
GTA 5 has a total of 28 different animal species to be found in its open world. While that number is still impressive, it was eclipsed by Red Dead Redemption 2, with over 200 unique animals with impeccable detail. While Leonida State likely won’t match that number due to the difference in setting, GTA VI’s trailers and screenshots already show a noticeably higher presence of animals in both urban and natural environments compared to GTA V’s entire animal compendium.

A cat can be seen hiding in a store, a raccoon rummaging through trash, and several dogs, including a Chihuahua, German Shepherd, and Doberman, can be seen walking, sitting, and running alongside their owners. An iguana is also shown wearing a shirt and a crown, while an alligator is seen entering a store, and a snake appears inside Lucia and Jason’s place in GTA 6.
Rockstar already has a massive library of wildlife assets and animation work from Red Dead Redemption 2, and GTA 6 will likely build on that foundation with improved versions of existing systems and new animals tailored to each major region of Leonida State.
Some of the animals seen so far include:
- Alligators
- Boars
- Bobcats
- Cranes
- Deer
- Dolphins
- Ducks
- Eels
- Egrets
- Flamingos
- Foxes
- Herons
- Manatees
- Panthers (Florida Panther)
- Pelicans
- Pigeons
- Iguanas
- Raccoons
- Sea Turtles
- Seagulls
- Snakes
- Squirrels
- Terns
- Tiger Sharks
- Woodpeckers
Hunting is also seen in several screenshots and trailers, and it could potentially carry over from Red Dead Redemption 2 in some form.

Finally, Rockstar is expanding on underwater exploration with highly detailed marine environments, including coral reefs, diverse fish species, rock formations, sea turtles, and underwater plant life, all hinting at a much stronger incentive to explore the depths of the world in GTA 6.

A Much Larger Focus on In-Game Social Media and Dynamic Events
Being able to use phones and access a variety of helpful and necessary features has been a thing since Grand Theft Auto 4 and later Grand Theft Auto 5, but neither game existed during the rise of modern social media, and that shift clearly shapes what a contemporary GTA title can do. Rockstar has made a conscious effort to showcase in-app social media feeds, characters creating content, filming disturbances, and documenting their daily lives on their phones. Both Lucia and Jason are seen actively using smartphones, alongside smartwatches and earbuds.

With how prevalent TikTok-style live feeds appear in both trailers, there is a strong chance Rockstar is integrating gameplay systems directly into these feeds. Players may find stranger missions, dynamic events, or points of interest while browsing their phone feed. There is also potential for ordering services through delivery systems or building a social media presence that could unlock perks or bonuses. While it remains to be seen how deep these systems go, it is clear that social media is a major part of Grand Theft Auto VI, and the phone is no longer just a contacts list and web browser, but a central gameplay interface.
So far, GTA 6 stands as a clear step up from GTA 5 across nearly every technical and visual aspect, with a world that feels far denser, more reactive, and filled with small details across every layer of its systems.
