Will GTA 6 Release on Switch 2?

GTA 6 is currently set to release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in November 2026, and Rockstar has only confirmed those two platforms for launch. That said, Rockstar has expanded the availability of its games beyond their original launch platforms over the years, and Nintendo platforms aren’t an exception. So, will GTA 6 ever release on the Nintendo Switch 2? Here’s what we think.

Is GTA 6 Coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

As of this writing, GTA 6 isn’t launching on Nintendo Switch 2, and Rockstar hasn’t announced any plans to release the game on the platform.

However, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a Switch 2 version in the future.

Could GTA 6 Run on Nintendo Switch 2?

Technically speaking, GTA 6 could run on the Nintendo Switch 2, but it would require extensive optimization, significant compromises to visual fidelity, and aggressive use of upscaling. The Nintendo Switch 2 does have the benefit of DLSS thanks to its NVIDIA chip, but its CPU holds it back, and it’s considerably less powerful than the CPUs in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That said, a Switch 2 version isn’t impossible, and Rockstar has designed its recent major releases with scalability in mind. The Switch 2 is a substantial upgrade over the original Switch and is capable of running much more demanding games than Nintendo’s previous hardware.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good example of this scalability. Despite its demanding visuals, the game can scale down to relatively modest hardware while still delivering an impressive overall presentation. Its Steam Deck version is particularly notable, as it looks considerably more impressive than many games targeting similar hardware.

The bigger question is whether Rockstar and Take-Two would consider the investment worthwhile, especially if bringing GTA 6 to Switch 2 requires significant compromises. If I had to guess, a Switch 2 version could potentially launch a few years after the game’s initial release in 2026.

Rockstar Has a History of Supporting Nintendo Platforms

It may not seem obvious since the original Switch never received Rockstar’s major open-world titles like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, but Rockstar is no stranger to Nintendo hardware. The company has released several games across its franchises on Nintendo consoles over the years, dating back to the Nintendo DS and Wii.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive EditionNintendo Switch2021Same year

Ultimately, it will come down to whether Rockstar and Take-Two believe the potential audience justifies the resources required to make GTA 6 run well on the hardware. Given Rockstar’s history with Nintendo and the Switch 2’s capabilities, I wouldn’t rule out a port several years after the game’s initial release. For now, though, GTA 6 on Switch 2 remains unconfirmed but certainly possible.
