Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are the two protagonists of GTA 6, and much of the promotional material, particularly the trailers, depicts them as a couple in a romantic relationship. However, GTA 6 puts a greater emphasis on player choice than previous entries in the series, and that extends to Jason and Lucia’s relationship. So, can you opt out of romance altogether? Here’s what you need to know.

Can You Opt Out of Romance in GTA 6?

Yes, you can opt out of the romantic side of Jason and Lucia’s relationship in GTA 6 and play them as platonic partners in crime instead.

This was confirmed by Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, in his interview with IGN. When asked about the possibility of opting out of romance, Nelson explained that it’s entirely up to the player.

“It’s not something that we want to foist upon players,” Nelson said.

Jason and Lucia will remain partners in crime throughout the story, and you won’t have to pursue their romantic relationship to work together, if that’s what you want and how you see them. As Nelson explained, “They will remain partners in crime. You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other’s back – whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that.”

However, that doesn’t mean your other choices won’t matter. Nelson confirmed that Jason and Lucia’s relationship will affect how their story plays out, so there are still reasons to pay attention to it even if you don’t want to pursue the romantic side of things.

How Do You Maintain Jason and Lucia’s Relationship in GTA 6?

If you want Jason and Lucia to remain romantically close, you’ll have to put some effort into their relationship outside the main story missions. Simply completing missions together won’t necessarily be enough.

Nelson explained that you can spend time together in the open world through activities like playing pool, mini golf, and kayaking. You can also go to the gym together, letting them spend time together while improving their physical stats.

Even smaller interactions matter when you’re out on your own. Ignoring a goodnight text from Jason or Lucia negatively affects their relationship, while holding hands has a positive impact.

Can Jason and Lucia’s Relationship Deteriorate in GTA 6?

Yes, Jason and Lucia’s relationship can deteriorate if you don’t put in the effort to maintain it. As mentioned above, spending time together and participating in activities can help keep them close, while neglecting the relationship and its smaller interactions can have the opposite effect.

Rockstar hasn’t explained exactly how the system fully works or what it takes for the relationship to reach a breaking point. We know that ignoring messages can have an impact, but the full list of actions that affect the relationship hasn’t been confirmed.

It’s also worth noting that a deteriorating romantic relationship doesn’t mean Jason and Lucia will stop working together, and and you can still play through their shared story without pursuing romance. The main difference is how their relationship develops and how their story plays out.
