A woman who worked at a Firestone auto shop on San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine was likely in for a surprise when she arrived for her shift and noticed a man sleeping in a chair outside the business. While she didn’t think much of it initially deciding to head inside to start her shift, things changed when she heard her Chevrolet Suburban start.
Naturally, she immediately ran outside of the shop to see what was going on, only to allegedly find 30-year-old Jesus Francisco Contreras Suarez sitting in the driver’s seat. He was allegedly reversing the SUV across the parking lot, which meant that the woman didn’t have much time to react.
@tade.runs We were out on our usual 5-mile run with the TRI HRD crew and my 2 kids when we heard all the commotion 😳 Definitely not something you expect to see around here! Glad everyone is safe. 🏃♂️🚨 #staugustine #caughtoncamera #saintjohnsflorida #running ♬ original sound – tade.runs
She quickly reached through the partly open driver’s window to unlock the door. According to the police, Suarez raised the window while the woman’s arm was still inside the vehicle to stop her from unlocking it. Later reports also supported this statement by documenting a bruise on her left upper arm.
Members of a passing running group heard the woman screaming and decided to see what was happening. They noticed the incident, and one member decided to call 911, while another recorded part of the confrontation on a cellphone. The Firestone manager also reportedly confronted Suarez. According to reports, Suarez ultimately got out of the SUV and sat in the same chair where he was initially sleeping until the police eventually arrived.

The SUV Was Successfully Saved and Suarez Was Charged
The police arrived at the scene and arrested Suarez. He was charged with carjacking without a firearm or weapon and was held at the St. John’s County Jail without bond. Fortunately for the woman, her SUV wasn’t stolen because of her quick thinking and the nearby people who acted quickly.
As for Suarez, the police did reportedly note signs of impairment, but found insufficient probable cause for a DUI charge. Suarez also reportedly declined field sobriety tasks.
