25-year-old Elton John Shea of Clarion, Pennsylvania, may have stopped working at a hotel on Dolby Street in Monroe Township, but that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t have anything to do with it again. On September 22, a hotel guest reported that her black Harley-Davidson jacket had been taken from the outside doorknob of her room.

Pennsylvania State Police responded as soon as they could, coming at the scene at approximately 6:11 PM. According to the criminal complaint, Shea had walked onto the second floor and headed toward a stairwell. He then allegedly noticed the hotel guest’s jacket that was hanging on the outside doorknob, turned back, took the jacket, and left through the other end of the building.

This complaint was allegedly supported by the hotel surveillance footage, which reportedly captured everything mentioned in it. After hotel management reviewed that surveillance footage, they identified the alleged suspect as Shea, who was a former employee who had been let go the previous year.

Just the hotel management’s word wasn’t enough, so troopers decided to confirm Shea’s identity by comparing the footage with his Pennsylvania driver’s license photo on September 23. The investigators concluded that the alleged suspect was indeed Shea, who hadn’t worked at the hotel for around a year.

Shea Was Charged For the Jacket

Shea was arrested, and the state filed charges on October 14. The charges were related to misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. It’s unknown whether the jacket was ultimately recovered, since the information isn’t mentioned in the court reports.

Not to mention, the cost of the jacket itself was relatively low at $200. Low-level or second-degree misdemeanor charges usually carry fines, probation, community service, or a jail sentence. According to court documents, Shea’s reported scheduled preliminary hearing is set for November 10.
