GTA 6 May Be Making the Same Mistake Red Dead Redemption 2 Did

Grand Theft Auto 6 is being praised for having extremely detailed graphics and realism. However, some fans and even creators have voiced their concerns about a handful of things. In particular, the game’s realism may be leaving the realm of being fun and entering the zone of being tedious.

This conversation mostly started when the YouTuber TGG, who attended Rockstar’s hands-on preview for GTA 6, explained that gas stations let players refuel or repair their vehicles. The repairing aspect is nothing new, since the GTA games have let players do this for years. However, many fans believe that having players refuel their cars could become an issue.

Even TGG himself stated that the whole fuel thing likely won’t be an issue unless you pay attention to how much fuel you have. However, he also said that attempting to escape after a robbery and finding out that your car doesn’t have any fuel could potentially be a pain, especially since no previous game in the series has had this problem.

TGG decided to discuss this feature with co-studio head of Rockstar North, Rob Nelson. He said that while the feature is fairly uncertain, even within Rockstar, he doesn’t think it’ll have too many issues. After all, the entire thing only takes a couple of seconds to do.

Mandatory Refueling Would Take Away From GTA 6’s Immersion

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 would have certain aspects that simulate real life. Assuming that means things such as tracking exercise and other character conditions, it’s something that makes complete sense. However, the game also risks struggling to distinguish between realism that makes the world more immersive and realism that simply makes the player wait.

For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 was critically acclaimed for its realism and immersion. But the game had a handful of issues that didn’t have to be included. Some systems that were meant to make the game feel more realistic actually made it feel slower. My hope is that Rockstar doesn’t unintentionally add those types of mechanics to Grand Theft Auto 6.

It’s important to remember that just because a mechanic is short doesn’t mean it’s worthwhile. There’s a chance that refueling cars is just a neat gimmick that players can utilize if they want, but making it mandatory and having certain cars have smaller fuel tanks could ruin much of the immersion and escape that players want from this game series.
