No, GTA 6 is not a cross-generation release and is coming exclusively to PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.
Rockstar has never released a mainline Grand Theft Auto game as a cross-generation title, meaning it has never launched across two console generations simultaneously. Instead, the studio typically releases enhanced ports for newer hardware a year or more after the original launch.

Since the PS4 and Xbox One aren’t capable of running GTA 6, and the PS6 and Xbox Helix have yet to launch, the game is releasing exclusively for the current generation of consoles: the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Will GTA 6 Come to PS6 and Xbox Helix?
Yes, most likely. The Grand Theft Auto series has a long history of receiving ports and enhanced editions on newer hardware. GTA 5 is the best example: it launched first on the PS3 and Xbox 360 before arriving on the PS4 and Xbox One with significant graphical improvements, followed by an enhanced release for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S featuring ray tracing, faster loading times, and additional visual upgrades.
With the PS6 and Xbox Helix expected to arrive in the coming years, it’s highly likely that Rockstar will release an enhanced version of GTA 6 for the new consoles. While the studio hasn’t confirmed any plans, a future release with visual and performance improvements would be consistent with its approach to previous Grand Theft Auto titles.
In that sense, GTA 6 will eventually become a cross-generation title, much like GTA 5, which was released across three console generations as well as PC. With GTA 6 expected to surpass GTA 5’s already record-breaking launch sales, it’s reasonable to expect Rockstar to support both the game and its online component for many years to come.
