GTA 6 has thriving wildlife, with animals, birds, fish, and reptiles coexisting with Leonida’s diverse inhabitants. Like Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar has dedicated considerable effort to rendering each animal with incredible detail, complex animations, and unique behaviors. And it’s not just wild animals; we’ve also seen plenty of domesticated animals throughout Leonida. However, can you keep pets in GTA 6? Here’s everything we know.

Does GTA 6 Have Pets?

Pets are present in GTA 6, but player-owned pets have not been confirmed.

Across the trailers, screenshots, and the recent Extended Look, we’ve seen several domesticated animals living alongside Leonida’s residents. People can be seen walking dogs on the street, next to their bikes, at the beach, and more. Several dog breeds have already been spotted in GTA 6, including Chihuahuas, Dobermans, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers. There’s also a screenshot of Bae-Luxe with a leashed Rottweiler, which appeared in the Dazed Digital issue for GTA 6.

Jason directly interacts with a dog during the Extended Look and pets it, but he can also study or scold it. The interaction is far more detailed than what we’ve seen with dogs in Red Dead Redemption 2, with the dog reacting more naturally as Jason approaches.

Rockstar has even accounted for what happens after a dog does its business. Rob Nelson told TGG that players can pick up a dog’s poop using the owner’s discarded doggy bag. You can even interfere with the NPC, take the bag, and throw the poop at someone else. Additionally, pets and pet owners can react differently to you as you approach them, which is a nice detail and plays into the interaction system.

We’ve also seen domesticated cats in the footage. A python enclosure can also be seen inside Jason and Lucia’s safehouse, although it’s unclear whether the snake belongs to them or serves purely as environmental detail. There’s even a dressed iguana hanging around the safehouse while Jason plays pool with Cal, although it’s unclear whether this is another pet or simply a character-specific animal.

However, none of the previews confirmed whether players can actually own a pet. Some community reports claim that a creator who visited Rockstar North asked about pets and was told that Jason and Lucia’s status as fugitives made the feature impractical. However, I haven’t been able to trace that claim back to the creator’s own comments, so it shouldn’t be presented as confirmed information.

So while GTA 6 clearly has domesticated animals and surprisingly deep interactions with them, there’s still a major distinction between interacting with someone else’s pet and having one of your own. Rockstar has yet to confirm an adoption, ownership, or pet-care system for Jason and Lucia.
