Man Accused of Two Sporting Goods Store Thefts Found Walking Through Traffic

Most would expect people who are suspected of being involved in theft incidents to lay low, but 31-year-old Joshua Maloney, who is allegedly suspected of the same thing, didn’t do that. At around 6 PM on October 14, police received several calls about a man walking in and out of traffic near 555 Maine Mall Road in South Portland, Maine.

While this wouldn’t really be too much of an issue in itself, the caller described the man as wearing all black and appearing intoxicated. This prompted the police to arrive at the scene, where officers recognized Maloney as a suspect in two felony theft incidents. According to reports, Maloney had allegedly been involved in two felony theft incidents at Dick’s Sporting Goods during the preceding week.

In addition to all of this, the police also said that Maloney was already out on bail. This was for unrelated charges, including charges involving cocaine possession, fentanyl possession, and violating release conditions. While these charges were completely unrelated to this current incident, the alleged possession of fentanyl could be relevant to when he was arrested on October 14.

According to reports, Maloney also wasn’t walking in and out of traffic empty-handed. He was allegedly carrying a liquid that presumptively tested positive for a fentanyl compound or methamphetamine. The preliminary test did not establish which substance it was.

Maloney Now Faces Violation of Conditions of Release

Maloney was arrested after the police allegedly discovered the illegal substance on his person. He was taken to Cumberland County Jail, where he now faces charges. These charges include two felony theft counts, possession of scheduled drugs, and violation of conditions of release.

It’s unknown what the value of the merchandise Maloney allegedly stole from Dick’s Sporting Goods is. Authorities have not publicly specified the amount of his previous bail in the reports reviewed, and it’s unknown whether a new bail amount was set for this arrest.
