GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience, and Rockstar Games has been working on its most ambitious open-world title in some form for more than a decade. It’s a massive project, built by thousands of people, with a world that could keep players busy for hundreds of hours. But what happens after launch? Will GTA 6 get additional content, whether paid or free? Here’s everything we know so far, along with what we think could happen.
Has Rockstar Confirmed DLC for GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn’t officially announced any single-player DLC, story expansions, or plans for paid post-launch content.
The only additional content currently available for purchase alongside the Standard Edition is the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade for $20, which unlocks the extra content included in the Ultimate Edition. However, this is an edition upgrade rather than a traditional DLC expansion.

Outside of this, Rockstar hasn’t announced any plans for single-player expansions or other post-launch content.

Will GTA 6 Eventually Get DLC?
GTA 6 is a massive game with an $80 price tag, making it one of the most expensive standard editions of a single-player game. It’s certainly possible that Rockstar could release DLC or a substantial expansion down the line, but the studio’s recent history doesn’t give me much reason to expect one just yet.
In September 2026, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed during the company’s annual shareholder meeting that GTA 6 would launch as a single-player experience, with no recurrent consumer spending anticipated at launch.
We’re launching GTA VI as a single player experience on two major platforms, and therefore there’s no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch.
Recurrent consumer spending is Take-Two’s term for ongoing spending on things like virtual currency, microtransactions, battle passes, and other in-game purchases. However, Zelnick specifically referred to the game’s launch, so this doesn’t entirely rule out paid expansions or other forms of monetization a few months or years into launch.

There’s also the question of how quickly Rockstar can produce new content going forward. In an October 2026 Bloomberg report, Jason Schreier spoke with Rockstar leadership about how the engine, tools, and team established during GTA 6’s development should allow the studio to build new content more quickly.
Phil Hooker, one of Rockstar’s development leads, explained that the studio can build on this foundation rather than start from scratch. That puts Rockstar in a better position to work on future content, but it doesn’t necessarily mean GTA 6 will get DLC. Technically speaking, GTA Online, built on GTA 5’s technology, still gets content, some 13 years later, just not single-player content.
Rockstar’s Recent History With DLC
Rockstar isn’t opposed to single-player DLC. GTA 4 received two substantial story expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, while Red Dead Redemption got Undead Nightmare, a standalone expansion that introduced a zombie-themed storyline.
However, Rockstar hasn’t released any single-player expansions for GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2. That doesn’t mean it never considered the idea, though. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser confirmed that a Trevor-focused single-player expansion for GTA 5 was in development before it was eventually abandoned.
Instead, Rockstar has continued to support GTA Online with regular updates and new content, including appearances from GTA 5’s original protagonists, Trevor, Michael, and Franklin, and even introduced new characters like Valentina, who returned in GTA 6. While these updates have kept the online component going for years, they’re not traditional single-player expansions on the scale of Episodes from Liberty City, or even Undead Nightmare.

Looking at Rockstar’s recent releases, the studio seems to have prioritized ongoing online support over traditional single-player expansions. Whether that changes with GTA 6 remains to be seen, though I don’t see it changing considering how profitable GTA Online is.
What Could GTA 6 DLC Look Like?
Back in July 2022, Jason Schreier reported to Bloomberg that Rockstar planned to continually update GTA 6 after launch, adding new missions and cities on a regular basis. This approach was partly intended to reduce crunch during the final months of development.
However, that report is now several years old, and a lot can and has changed during development. We don’t know if Rockstar still intends to follow that plan, and the original report didn’t specify whether the new cities and missions would be part of the single-player campaign, the online component, or both.

Schreier’s more recent October 2026 report gives us a better idea of how Rockstar wants to approach future content. The studio sees GTA 6 as a foundation it can build on to produce new content more quickly, thanks to the technology, tools, and team established during development. Given the scale of Leonida, adding an entirely new city to GTA 6 would be a massive undertaking. Unless Rockstar already has something in development that it hasn’t revealed, we’d be looking at a substantial amount of additional work.
If GTA 6 does get single-player DLC, I think an expansion set within the existing world makes more sense. Rockstar could introduce a new storyline for Jason and Lucia, expand on existing locations, introduce new playable characters for a short campaign, or add missions and activities that build on the base game’s systems without having to create an entirely new city.

Of course, these are just possibilities. Rockstar hasn’t shared anything about what a possible DLC could look like.
Will GTA 6 Get Story DLC?
For now, we simply don’t know. Rockstar hasn’t announced any single-player expansions, and Strauss Zelnick’s comments about spending at launch don’t tell us what the studio might do months or years later.
However, Rockstar’s more recent reporting hints that it wants to build on GTA 6’s existing foundation and produce new content more efficiently. Combine that with the studio’s history of substantial single-player expansions, and it’s certainly something worth keeping an eye on.
Whether that means new storylines, expanded locations, or content for GTA 6’s eventual online component remains to be seen. Until Rockstar shares more details, any claims about specific expansions or release plans are just speculation.
