Leonida has a lot to offer when it comes to side activities and optional content, and Rockstar has shown off plenty of what players can get up to while exploring the world. Hunting and fishing were both detailed side activities in Red Dead Redemption 2, and they are making a return in GTA 6. Here is everything we know about how fishing works in GTA 6.
Fishing in GTA 6
Fishing makes a return in GTA 6 following its appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2, and according to Rob Nelson, current head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, it’s just as detailed as its rendition in Red Dead Redemption 2. However, there’s a big caveat here: while fishing is available as an activity, you can’t actually keep the fish you catch. Instead, it’s a “catch and release” activity.
According to Nelson, fishing also has some narrative significance, but it’s primarily a fun activity with challenges and collectibles tied to it. Unlike hunting, fishing isn’t intended to be a way to make money.
Rockstar has also confirmed fishing as one of the activities available in Mount Kalaga National Park, describing the area as offering “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails.”

A national landmark up against the state’s northern border, Mount Kalaga offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails.
During the Extended Look for GTA 6, we can see Jason, Lucia, and Cal Hampton fishing from a stationary Lure Predator L35P at around the 25:50 mark, potentially as part of a story sequence. However, the footage doesn’t reveal specific details about the fishing mechanics, such as the available fish species, bait, or fishing interface.
Since we’ll be able to study and document wildlife in GTA 6, it’s very likely that this will extend to aquatic life as well. If you’re a completionist, you’ll likely have to engage with fishing and find or study every type of fish species across the coastal and oceanic areas of Leonida. Rockstar hasn’t explicitly confirmed this yet, but it would make sense given the game’s emphasis on wildlife and collection-oriented activities.
