GTA 6 has a bigger focus on realism and grounded mechanics to create a more immersive experience, and that extends to driving and vehicle management as well. For the first time in the series, vehicles have fuel that needs to be managed, rather than running on the infinite tank of pixels we’ve had in previous GTA titles. Here’s how fuel works in GTA 6 and what you can expect.
Fuel and Charge in GTA 6
In GTA 6, vehicles require fuel or an electric charge to run.
When you approach a gas station, you’ll see two options: repair or refuel. If you select the fuel option, Jason or Lucia will exit the vehicle and fill it up while an animation plays as you hold R2. The animation is short, and fuel is inexpensive.

Rockstar’s Rob Nelson showed TGG how the fueling system works during a preview event at Rockstar North. According to Rockstar, the mechanic isn’t meant to be a headache and should be fairly manageable unless you enter a vehicle that’s nearly empty and a gas station isn’t nearby.

Similarly, electric vehicles will need to be recharged, but we’re not sure how that works yet. You can see a vehicle charging station during the Extended Look at the 15:52 mark, and that’s likely how you’ll charge electric vehicles. It’s also possible that some gas stations will have charging outlets for electric vehicles.

How this extends to other vehicle types without traditional means of fueling is still a mystery. We don’t know how fuel works for planes, helicopters, or boats, and we’ll likely learn more in the coming months. For now, Rockstar has only demonstrated how fueling works for land vehicles, so we’ll have to wait for more details on how the system applies to the rest of the vehicle lineup.
This is a first for the series, and many players have wanted to see it introduced in some form. Based on what we know so far, it’s another mechanic that grounds the world in a higher degree of realism, but it isn’t overly realistic either. That said, it’s also fairly controversial, with mixed fan opinions. Players who prefer the more grounded approach of Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 4 may appreciate it more than the largely arcadey driving of GTA 5.
