Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains one of the most important entries in the series for several reasons, but it also introduced character customization for CJ, establishing a feature that would become a staple of Rockstar’s open-world design. GTA V expanded customization significantly, while Red Dead Redemption 2 pushed player personalization even further.

Based on the trailers and official screenshots released so far, GTA 6 appears set to deliver the most advanced character customization system Rockstar has created yet. Here is everything we know about character customization in GTA 6 and how you’ll be able to personalize Jason and Lucia.

What We Know About GTA 6 Customization

Here is everything we know about GTA 6’s character customization options based on both trailers and every screenshot featuring both Jason and Lucia.

Hairstyles and Hair Length Options

Both Jason and Lucia can be seen wearing different hairstyles and lengths. Jason sticks to short textured crop fades and messy medium length styles, while Lucia appears with several looks, including braids, wavy shoulder length hair, a messy bun, a sleek high bun, a low ponytail or loose tie back, and a straight shoulder length cut. Jason’s facial hair also varies across screenshots, suggesting that both characters may be able to grow and style their hair over time, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.

While changing hairstyles has been around since GTA: San Andreas, the variety has steadily expanded, and GTA 6 will likely feature the most options yet, with deeper customization such as curls, dyes, cuts, and gradient styles to fully tailor and personalize each look. We’ve already seen hair react dynamically to character movement and the environment, so hair maintenance could potentially play a role as well, similar to the pomade system in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Clothing and Outfit Variety

Jason and Lucia are seen wearing different outfits in practically every screenshot and throughout both trailers of GTA 6. There is a noticeable level of outfit variety shown for both characters that appears to exceed what we have seen from previous GTA protagonists. It is not just the variety, but the physics of clothing that really stand out.

Clothing reacts naturally to the characters’ positions, forms creases based on movement, sleeves can be rolled up, caps can be flipped, and shirts can be mixed and matched. Clothes also become wrinkled, dirtier, stained, sweatier, and more worn out depending on the scene.

In just Trailer 2, Jason is seen wearing 29 different outfit combinations, while Lucia has nearly 26 outfits. This means that there is a large pool of clothing items that can be mixed and matched to suit different styles for both protagonists.

Accessories and Personal Style Options

Like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, you can expect a ton of physical accessories that both Jason and Lucia can wear. Given how this is a modern title, both Jason and Lucia have been seen wearing earbuds while lounging and working out, and smartwatches, which weren’t present in GTA 5. All accessories worn by both characters and even NPCs have some physics properties, making them more believable parts of their entire outfit.

Just like Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA Online, you will likely be able to save custom outfits and switch between them during gameplay to suit different situations.

Tattoos, Facial Features and Makeup

Jason has multiple tattoos on his body that appear to be tied to his time in the army. However, like previous GTA titles, you will likely be able to add more tattoos to different parts of the body at parlors across Leonida State. While Lucia is already seen wearing earrings, Jason also has two ear piercings, meaning he can likely wear earrings as well. He also has a few facial scars, which could indicate a more dynamic system for facial features.

Similarly, Lucia’s makeup appears highly dynamic throughout the trailers and screenshots. She can be seen wearing different lipstick shades, eyeliner styles, blush, and glossy finishes depending on the outfit and setting, something not previously seen in this level of detail in past GTA or Red Dead titles.

Some scenes feature a more natural look with minimal makeup applied, especially when she is seen leaving the Leonida Penitentiary and performing community service, while other moments lean into heavier nightlife-inspired makeup, hinting at a wide range of cosmetic options that players can tailor to different outfits and occasions.

Overall, everything shown so far by Rockstar suggests that GTA 6 is taking character customization to a new level. From hairstyles and facial features to clothing variety, accessories, and makeup, Jason and Lucia have a far more expressive range of personalization than previous protagonists.

While Rockstar has not confirmed the full extent of these customization systems, the trailers and screenshots point toward a deeper, more dynamic approach to character presentation that evolves with the world around them and the player’s personal style preferences.
