Now that we have a somewhat solid release date for GTA 6, the next bit of crucial release information is the pricing. With growing development costs, publishers raising and normalizing $70 and $80 for AAA releases, it’s fair to assume that GTA 6 will be priced accordingly. But can it hit $100? Here is what we think.

GTA Series Price History

Before speculating on GTA 6’s price, it’s worth looking at how Rockstar has priced previous mainline entries. From the original Grand Theft Auto in 1997 on MS-DOS to Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox 360 and PS3, the series has historically aligned with industry pricing at launch.

GTA TitleLaunch Price (USD)Release DatePlatforms
Grand Theft Auto$49.99Nov 28, 1997PC (initial), later PS1, Game Boy Color
Grand Theft Auto 2$49.99Oct 22, 1999PC (initial), later PS1, Dreamcast, Game Boy Color
Grand Theft Auto III$49.99Oct 22, 2001PS2 (initial), later PC, Xbox, mobile
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City$49.99Oct 27, 2002PS2 (initial), later PC, Xbox, mobile
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas$49.99Oct 26, 2004PS2 (initial), later PC, Xbox, mobile
Grand Theft Auto Advance$39.99Oct 26, 2004Game Boy Advance
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories$49.99Oct 24, 2005PSP (initial), later PS2, mobile
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories$49.99Oct 31, 2006PSP (initial), later PS2
Grand Theft Auto IV$59.99Apr 29, 2008PS3, Xbox 360 (initial), later PC
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars$39.99Mar 17, 2009Nintendo DS (initial), later PSP, mobile
Grand Theft Auto V$59.99Sep 17, 2013PS3, Xbox 360 (initial), later PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, PC

Despite the commercial success, critical acclaim, and iconic status, one thing is clear from the information above: Rockstar has always followed industry pricing standards rather than setting them.

They could have priced GTA V at $70 instead of the standard $60, but chose not to. The same applies to San Andreas, the best-selling title on the PS2, which people likely would have paid $60 for, but Rockstar still stuck to the standard at the time.

What Could Influence GTA 6’s Price?

Like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 before it, GTA 6 is likely to be one of the most expensive entertainment products ever developed. Development costs have been rising every year, and Rockstar is no longer a small studio with a few hundred employees, but thousands of creatives and developers across multiple studios worldwide working together on the behemoth that is GTA 6.

Most publishers in 2026 have priced their premium titles at $70, which has already become the accepted norm. Some publishers, including Nintendo, have even pushed beyond that with an $80 price tag for select titles, including Mario Kart World, without significantly changing spending habits, as fans are still willing to pay more when the quality and scale are there.

However, based on Rockstar’s position and expectations around GTA’s sales, there is little pressure for them to set a new pricing standard. Doing so could risk alienating a large part of their audience, even if many would still be willing to pay it. Despite some movement toward $80 pricing, $70 remains the standard for most AAA releases.

Could GTA 6 Cost $100?

Even though Rockstar could justify a $100 price tag for GTA 6 given its scale, it’s unlikely the base edition will be priced that high.

Recently, at iicon, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on the possible pricing for GTA 6, giving insight into how the company approaches pricing decisions:

Consumers pay for the value that you bring to them, and our job is to charge way way way less of the value delivery.

How you feel about something you buy is the intersection of the thing itself and what you pay for. Consumers need to feel like the thing itself is amazing and the price they were charged was fair for what they got.

If you look at it through that lens, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But that isn’t the lens through which we look. Instead, we look at… how do we deliver something amazing, and how do we make sure that what people pay for it feels very reasonable.

This approach is largely consistent with Take-Two’s historical pricing strategy, where delivering value for the player’s initial purchase is prioritized over pushing the highest possible launch price.

Expected GTA 6 Price

With everything we know, here is the expected pricing for GTA 6 based on current industry trends and Rockstar’s likely positioning:

GTA 6 EditionExpected Price (Speculation)
GTA 6 Standard Edition$70
GTA 6 Deluxe Edition$100 – $120

Ultimately, while GTA 6 could easily justify a higher price given its scale, production costs, and market position, Rockstar has historically preferred to align with industry standards rather than break them. With $70 still the current AAA baseline, it remains the most realistic expectation for the base edition given their pricing history.

That said, with the way pricing trends are shifting, especially for premium editions, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rockstar explore higher-priced versions of GTA 6 even if the standard release stays in line with the market.
