Rockstar has been largely quiet about the next iteration of GTA Online, instead keeping its focus on the single-player experience of GTA 6. While Rockstar doesn’t have a history of introducing monetization into its single-player games, rumors and speculation ahead of the Extended Look suggested that GTA 6 could include some form of in-game market or monetization hub. During the July 2026 preview event, Rockstar finally addressed the question.

Will GTA 6 Have Microtransactions?

No, GTA 6 will not feature in-game monetization or microtransactions.

During the July 2026 preview event at Rockstar North in Scotland, Andy Cortez from Kinda Funny Games asked co-studio head Rob Nelson whether players would be able to use real-world money to buy things in GTA 6. According to Cortez, Nelson answered, “No monetization.”

This is a clear assurance from Rockstar that puts to rest the rumors and speculation surrounding whether GTA 6 will include any form of monetization beyond the price of the Standard and Deluxe Editions.

While this would’ve been a given when GTA 5 launched back in 2013, the gaming landscape has changed quite a bit since then. Though still relatively rare, many modern full-priced single-player AAA titles now feature in-game monetization systems that let players purchase cosmetics, currency, and sometimes even gear with real money. Ubisoft, in particular, is notorious for this practice and has dedicated monetization shops in several of its major releases, letting players spend real money on content that is added frequently.

Rockstar’s aggressive monetization in GTA Online also gave players reason to pause, with many fearing that Shark Cards or similar monetization schemes could eventually make their way into the single-player experience as well. Thankfully, that won’t be the case with GTA 6’s single-player, at least based on what Rockstar has confirmed so far.

In addition to asking about microtransactions, Greg Miller from Kinda Funny Games also asked Rob Nelson whether generative AI was used during development. According to Miller, the Rockstar team was quick to respond with “No AI” as well. This is consistent with Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick’s comments from February 2026, when he confirmed that “Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building.”

This puts GTA 6 in the clear on two major controversies ahead of launch and should put much of the speculation about its development and single-player monetization to rest. It’s worth noting that this confirmation applies to GTA 6 itself and doesn’t necessarily tell us how Rockstar plans to handle monetization in the next iteration of GTA Online.

Shark Cards and other recurring purchases have been an important part of GTA Online’s business model, while recurring consumer spending remains a significant source of revenue for Take-Two Interactive. With GTA Online’s successor still largely under wraps, we’ll have to wait and see what shape that monetization model evolves into for their next big multiplayer experience.
