There are a few things you can always expect in a GTA title, and a high degree of violence is one of them. From hand-to-hand combat to melee weapons and firearms, you can inflict plenty of pain on enemies and NPCs across these massive worlds. Each iteration has built upon its combat mechanics and expanded the choices available to players, and GTA 6 is taking that idea even further by making non-lethal combat options a viable way to deal with certain situations. Here is what we know.
Does GTA 6 Have Non-Lethal Takedowns?
Yes, Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 gives players several ways to deal with NPCs without directly killing them, including threatening them, knocking them out, and incapacitating them with gunfire.

During an interview with IGN, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar, Rob Nelson explained that players now have more ways to handle unexpected encounters. Rather than immediately resorting to lethal force, players can choose how they want to respond.
I could try and threaten them and make them back down or knock them out or shoot them but not kill them; just incapacitate them.
Non-Lethal Options
Here are the non-lethal and combat options that Rockstar has confirmed:

- Threaten NPCs: Players can threaten NPCs and potentially make them back down without attacking them.
- Aim Your Weapon: Simply aiming a gun can potentially cause NPCs to back down and flee.
- Knock NPCs Out: Rockstar explicitly confirms that players can knock NPCs out.
- Incapacitate NPCs: Players can shoot NPCs without killing them and instead leave them incapacitated.
- Shoot Weapons From Their Hands: Players can shoot an NPC’s weapon out of their hand, providing another way to avoid immediately killing them.
Lethal force remains an option, naturally.
Rockstar’s goal is to give players considerably more freedom when dealing with these situations. Nelson explained that the system is intended to open up different ways to approach encounters depending on how cautious or aggressive the player wants to be. He added that these options can give players room to decide whether they want to plan their actions and maintain a lower profile or simply escalate the situation.
As much as possible, we tried to design the game so that you have options. Things can escalate quite quickly if you want them to, or people who don’t want to escalate can try to avoid it.
In the same hands-on gameplay demonstration, Nelson pointed out an NPC marked with a yellow X and explained that they were incapacitated and would not get back up. This confirms that incapacitation can leave an NPC permanently out of the fight rather than requiring the player to kill them.

We’ve also seen evidence of this system in the Extended Look. When Jason uses Focus, different parts of an enemy are highlighted in different colors. The head and heart are marked in red, while areas such as the hands, knees, and ankles are highlighted in yellow. Targeting these yellow areas can allow Jason to disarm or incapacitate enemies, giving players more control over how they handle an encounter without necessarily killing them.

These options are part of a broader change to how Rockstar wants players to interact with GTA 6’s world. Nelson explained that the player is no longer necessarily the only dangerous person around either, with NPCs able to act on their own and create unexpected situations. We already know that some NPCs carry weapons and will put up a fight if needed.
You are still powerful and capable, but you are not the only one capable of violence or the only one with weapons or the only crazy person out there.
When those situations occur, GTA 6 gives players more ways to respond. You can threaten someone and make them back down, knock them out, incapacitate them, disarm them, or simply go all the way and kill them. Rockstar is essentially giving players more control over the level of violence they want to use in any given encounter.
