Rockstar Games Responds to the Leaks, And Now I’m Kind of Sad

Rockstar Games finally responded to the leaks that have been popping up all over the internet for the last week, dropping minor spoilers about random NPC encounters and other world events that would have been far more satisfying to find during natural exploration.

And, you know what? Their response genuinely has me feeling sad, not for the billion-dollar company, per se, but for the humans behind it who have worked super hard to bring us a game they’re proud of.

Rockstar’s Heartfelt Response

The second sentence of the response on X is what really got me here…

“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for the team,” the announcement reads, “and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.”

They go on to apologize about the fact “that everything has taken as long as it has.” An apology from Rockstar is almost insane, with a bunch of GTA 6 leaks hitting the internet. I’m pretty sure the last time was in 2021, five years ago, surrounding the controversy of the rough state that The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy launched in.

But this opening section really makes one think about the people behind the game, how hard they’ve worked, how excited they were to see the fan response to carefully planned official announcements and trailers, and now this.

The statement mentions how excited the team is for us to see the Extended Look tomorrow, and believe me, I am excited.

Rockstar again reiterated that the game is still set to launch on November 19, 2026.

“We thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week,” the statement reads, “your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine.”

And finally, the heartfelt message ends with, “Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.”

I Honestly Wish the Leaks Would Stop

So, I’ve been rather apathetic about the leaks up until this point. So what if some random person is leaking a bunch of early-build footage? I saw a few of the videos, got really excited for the Extended Look, then stopped watching the leaks as soon as they started spoiling things.

If others want to go into what could possibly be the last and best GTA title in our lifetime pre-spoiled, let them.

After this statement, I think I feel slightly more negative towards the leaks. I’m as unhappy as anyone that Rockstar and Sony are standing together in bringing about the death of physical media, but I also know leaking a bunch of footage that wasn’t ready for the internet will only make them dig in their heels even further.

Besides, when is the last time a mega corporation stood back on a decision purely because a large portion of fans were outraged? All these leaks are doing is spoiling more people on cool stuff to find naturally in the game eventually, and for some, like me, who value exploration and random encounters, just plain pissing them off.

I do hope something happens to save Physical Media. Maybe it’s time for a new-age version of the Sega Saturn or something. Spoiling and leaking games is more likely to make the problem even worse, not better.

But I’m curious, as always, what do you think of this whole situation? The comments are always open.
