Will GTA 6 Support Mods?

The GTA franchise has never been all too open to modding, even sending cease-and-desist orders to several mod platforms in the past. GTA 5 still doesn’t have a Steam Workshop, so wondering whether GTA 6 will even support modding is a viable question.

The answer may seem like a simple negative, given the above, but actually, there’s a lot of evidence that GTA 6 will support mods, though likely also never in the form of a Steam Workshop. Let’s explore.

The Big Push for UGC

User-Generated Content (UGC), which is—as the name implies—content made for the game by players. There appears to be quite a push from Rockstar and Take-Two to incorporate UGC into their latest title. GTA Online recently made several missions available to users to teach them how to create their own missions for the game.

There have also been whispers and rumors for some time, but beyond these, there’s actually hard evidence to support the fact that GTA 6 will be the most customizable title yet in the franchise.

Rockstar Bought FiveM and RedM in August of 2023

Cfx.re, the biggest modding platform for GTA Online roleplay servers, was acquired by Rockstar back in 2023. That’s the team behind FiveM and RedM, two massive role players in the GTA Online modding scene. It’s quite significant because Rockstar spent years threatening Cfx.re with legal action, but in the end just outright bought them.

In January of 2026, Rockstar launched the Cfx Marketplace, an official digital store for community-made mods. Another major step in the direction of being more mod-friendly. However, this didn’t come without repercussions for competitors of the platform Rockstar bought, since several cease-and-desist orders were served to other major modding platforms.

So, naturally, these first two points strongly support the fact that GTA 6 will be more open to modders, as long as the mods are sanctioned by Rockstar Games itself. The bigger question is, when?

Mods may not be Available from Day One

Mods usually require a PC, as PlayStation and Xbox systems are closed and don’t permit file customization under normal circumstances. So while UGC might be a type of modding platform, it’s more likely that, for a start, it’ll serve as more of a mission-creation tool than anything else.

Once the PC version arrives, assuming with near certainty that it will, modding should become more in-depth for PC users.

But the real question becomes just how far GTA 6 will push the boundaries of modding on consoles. It’s obvious they’ve been doing a lot of work on the UGC side of things, and even in GTA Online there’s a lot we can do now. If GTA 6’s code was built specifically to be highly dynamic, we may get a Roblox-type setup for it, which means almost anything could be possible.

This is very difficult to prove or disprove at this point in the cycle, so for now, the question remains open.

The Bottom Line: Will GTA 6 Support Mods?

The short answer is that it is highly likely—all signs seem to point in that direction. Rockstar would not have bought the modding platform if it didn’t intend to make modding a part of the game. The bigger question is when we’ll see the full scale of what they’re planning? Will it be on console, or will we have to wait for the PC release to see what the platform is really capable of?

Only time will tell.
